Symphony (Spec-First Agent Development)

emerging
Origin: OpenAI, March 5, 2026

OpenAI Symphony is an open-source Elixir/BEAM-based framework that turns project work into isolated, autonomous agent implementation runs. Key innovation: WORKFLOW.md / SPEC.md — in-repo configuration files that act as the contract between a development team and their coding agent. Polls issue trackers (Linear), creates isolated workspaces per issue, requires 'Proof of Work' (CI passes + walkthroughs) before merge. Symphony was the first major product released as a spec for agents — an agent-operating-instructions-as-code paradigm.

Usage

Use to represent 'the IDE-era gave way to the spec-era' argument. The WORKFLOW.md paradigm is the clearest example of how developer-agent interaction is changing.

Mutations & variants
'WORKFLOW.md' — shorthand for the spec-first configuration pattern 'SPEC.md' — related concept 'Harness engineering' — building machine-legible codebases 'Proof of Work' — Symphony's CI-pass requirement before merge

  • Developer communities: significant discourse on WORKFLOW.md pattern
Shelf life: Emerging — Symphony pattern will become standard vocabulary in 2026
Symphony is significant not just as a product but as a paradigm shift. 'WORKFLOW.md as the developer-agent contract' is the clearest new engineering pattern of Q1 2026.
