The $20→$100 jump is agent economics, not greed THREAD

Anthropic tested removing Claude Code from the $20 Pro plan. Developers went ballistic. They reversed in hours. But the underlying question isn't going away: who pays for agentic compute?

Running a dashboard costs pennies. Running an agent that loops, executes, and iterates costs real tokens. $20/mo was priced for chatbot usage. $100/mo is where agent economics actually land.

This isn't about greed — every AI coding tool is heading toward tiered pricing as agentic usage scales. The question isn't IF the price goes up. It's which tools are worth it at $100.

OpenAI shipped workspace agents in ChatGPT this week. Build once, team uses together, runs in the cloud while you sleep. Subtle shift: chatbot → team automation layer. The dashboard era really is ending.

A CS manager on our team built an agent in 6 hours — one evening — that saves him 10-20% of his time. Never written code. The bottleneck to AI transformation isn't capability. It's who claims ownership of the instructions.

Wrote up Anthropic's self-own about Claude Code pricing from this afternoon on my blog - it turned out they'd reversed course just as I hit publish, so I've tried to update it to reflect the current state

The reversal happened in hours, but the underlying math doesn't change. Running agents costs real compute. $20/mo was priced for chat. The $20→$100 jump isn't Anthropic being greedy — it's agent economics becoming visible.

Confirmed that Anthropic - as of now - has removed Claude Code from new Pro signups. This is what the pricing page looks like. Feels like Anthropic has the bet that those doing coding work will be willing and ready to pay at least $100/month, going forward.

The $100/mo bet isn't Anthropic-specific — it's the agent tier emerging across the whole category. Every serious coding agent will land here. The question for teams: build your workflows on tools priced at $20 that are likely heading to $100, or get ahead of it.
